Hotfly has been developed by Markus Heiss, owner of the italian online shop 1000 Mouches (1000 Flies). The brand catalogue displays fly tying materials, waders (one of their model is currently tested by Truites & Cie), fly reels and three fly rods : a classic 9' #4/5 and two specific models that we will review one after the other. Let's start with the euro-nymphing model NymphMaster V2 10' #2/3.
Hotfly NymphMaster V2 10' #2/3
Measurements:
Although advertised as a 2/3 power, the NymphMaster V2 shows to be more adapted to cast a #3 line : 31 cents are required to load the rod, which corresponds to an ERN value of 3.57. The important AA (more than 66°) put it in the Fast action class. In this category, it appears to be one of the fastest action in the market with a value of 77°. The rod is light, with only 2.92oz, but requires anyway a reel of 8.04oz to be correctly balanced.
Design and ergonomics:
Main components include a reel seat with a cork insert, a black mate finish to avoid reflection and titanium single leg guides. The distance between the grip and the stripper guide is rather important (23in) and will require an additional guide for nymph fishing. Quite rare for a rod in this category, the 4 pieces are securely assembled with spigot joints. The rod is delivered in a cordura tube with a handle and a shoulder strap.
Editor's opinion:
A good quality/price ratio ($325) for a multipurpose rod to fish fast waters (#3 and fast action). This rod will be a good choice for the versatile angler who wants to switch from dry fly to nymph fishing during the day.
